What is a Corrugated Cardboard Material?

Corrugated cardboard is a sturdiest material having two layers of cardboard and one layer of corrugated flute. It is named by the mixture of cardboard and corrugated zigzag paper, also known as the corrugated flute, which provides the cardboard with its power. The inner layer is corrugated flutes. The corrugated flute is then sandwiched between cardboard sheets. This is much thicker than standard paperboard due to the construction of three-layered material.

Understanding Corrugated Flutes

The flute is a corrugated material internal structure that is a curved segment existing between paperboard layers. The main feature of this flute material is that it can be modified by varying its heights, giving the material new qualities for shipping different products, such as fragile items to sensitive ones. These fluting and liners may be mixed in various levels to produce a variety of styles.

Corrugated materials are classified by A Flute, B Flute, C Flute, E Flute and F Flute. The 80% of all boards and cabinets are made of type C flute. The flutes’ alphabetical designations do not refer to the dimensions but strength.

· A Flute

Thickness = 5mm

It is perfect for items that require more cushioning. Unfortunately, due to the additional flutes space, it is not best-suitable for complex package designs.

· B Flute

Thickness= 3mm

The B flute is ideal for shipping boxes; it is the best choice if you want to give sturdiness to your box.

This form of corrugated flute provides a smoother printing surface, while its density adds more cushioning to the product. This kind of corrugated box is generally used for mailing purpose.

· C Flute

Thickness = 4 mm

The C flute layer is the most common flute for conventional slotted containers, often known as RSC. Being the most popular form of shipping box, these boxes are great packing choices for shipping and storage.

· E Flute

Thickness = 1.5 mm

This is best suitable for box printing but is not suitable for heavier items. The thin structure of Type E cardboard is useful for the reduction in space of box room. It offers a great breakage resistance and a great surface for printing. It is frequently used for food packaging, mail boxes, and consumer product packaging like jewelry, porcelain, and cosmetics.

· F Flute

Thickness = 2 mm

This is half as thick as compare to E flutes. This type of flute has an excellent printing surface as well as great strength. Because of the thin structure, it is possible to make strong packaging with minimum material. It is widely used in burger boxes and consumer product packaging such as grocery, watches, and shoes.

· BC Flute

Thickness = 6 mm

It is also known as double wall cardboard. The boxes made with BC flutes are capable handling huge and heavy objects since they are one of the thickest flute kinds.

· EB Flute
