Preview of the next Toyota electric car, Daihatsu leaks ahead?

At the 2022 GIIAS Indonesia, Astra Daihatsu Motor will unveil an all-electric concept version of its popular Ayla hatchback and, for the first time outside of Japan, will showcase the Rocky Hybrid fuel-electric hatchback as a symbol of Daihatsu’s commitment to its carbon neutrality goals. Daihatsu Indonesia will bring a total of nine new vehicles to the show, demonstrating the importance of the Indonesian market to the brand.

The Ayla BEV Concept is an all-electric concept based on the Ayla hatchback, developed and designed by Astra Daihatsu Motor’s Indonesia R&D Centre. The front end features a through-headlamp design, a closed shape with three-dimensional pattern detailing below and an electronic virtual rear view mirror on the side. According to official information, the Ayla BEV Concept will be powered by a 32 kWh battery and a 60 kW motor.

Another noteworthy model on display at Daihatsu is the Rocky Hybrid crossover SUV, which is making its overseas debut outside of Japan; the Rocky Hybrid, which will be released in 2021 as a Toyota Raize twin, uses e-Smart Hybrid technology to run on electricity, with the engine used only for power generation. It is similar to Nissan’s e-Power system. The Rocky Hybrid, which is currently available exclusively in Japan, is being shown in overseas markets, which may mean that this hybrid vehicle will be available locally.

In addition to the new cars and technologies on display at the Indonesia Motor Show, Daihatsu also conveyed the brand’s commitment to carbon neutrality, including the launch of more new cars that comply with the Indonesian government’s LCGC (Low Cost Green Car) policy, as well as regional models developed on the DNGA platform and equipped with the latest energy-saving technologies, deepening the brand’s strategic presence in the Southeast Asian market.
