How do I get rid of an infection in my ear?

Ear infections are very common in children. However, ear infections in adults are much less frequent. These infections are also known as otitis media. The ear drum may be irritated or inflamed, causing the eardrum to swell. This makes it harder for air to get in and out of the ear. When the eardrum ruptures, fluid comes out and causes swelling and pain.

If you suspect that you have an ear infection, the first step is to see your doctor. Make sure that you visit your doctor early so that he or she ear infections has time to diagnose the problem and give you antibiotics. Your doctor will probably tell you to start taking the medicine immediately. Some antibiotics work better than others.

To make sure that you are taking the right medicine, your doctor may want to draw blood to check your white blood cell count. Your doctor may also suggest that you take probiotic or other supplements along with the antibiotics to ensure your health.

You can clean your ears with a cotton ball soaked in hot water. Keep the cotton ball in for at least 5 minutes. Then place it back into hot water until it is dry. Never use alcohol on your ears. It can damage your eardrum. You should avoid using products that contain antibacterial or antiseptic ingredients.
