Auction House: Online & App (All Auctions Cancelled): As previously reported, eBay is ending the sale of firearms through their online and mobile auction system, claiming it makes the site a safer marketplace. The company believes this is a necessary step, in response to several instances where individuals purchasing guns were to illegally sell them. Each online gun auction was to take place via an online Auction site, allowing buyers and sellers to make direct transactions.
International Firearms Buyer: After the NRA banned online gun sales last month, more than 200 gun dealers created a new site. The International Firearms Buyer website allowed buyers and sellers to make direct transactions without going through eBay. It went into effect on July 19th, according to the NRA. The NRA says the sale of firearms in private online sales encourages illegal sales. According to the NRA, it’s actually legal for sellers to advertise or engage in private sales.
In an email response to questions from Guns.com, eBay responded to the NRA’s claims saying:
“We have taken the appropriate steps to make it clear to buyers that the sale of regulated items and firearms is prohibited through our online auction site. Until a new policy comes into effect, existing listings for regulated items, such as firearms, ammunition and firearm accessories will remain on the site. The NRA’s latest claim is simply untrue.
International Firearms Seller: Last year, the NRA also helped establish an online marketplace for gun sellers called Gunfly. Gunfly allows the gun seller to publish their sales online and promote their store. The NRA says this is more important than the NRA helping buyers find a gun dealer. A representative from eBay said, “There are thousands of law abiding gun sellers on eBay that sell legal firearms that buy legal firearms. Any attempt by the NRA to promote that is a completely different matter.” The NRA hasn’t purchased a firearm on eBay.
